I’m right there with you. My neighbors are great and when they learned I’m a published writer they were impressed. When they discovered we’re from the city they were mesmerized and expressed envy on our previously “cool” lifestyle but those are reactions and as time went by it’s clear I stand out and I’m viewed differently.

I think it’s mostly because these traits you’ve mentioned are free spirited and open minded whereas my neighbors are more set in their ways and based decisions off security opposed to experience.

I’m unsure if they feel they have learned anything from me but I know I’ve learned a great deal from them. Some of which I’ve enjoyed and some where I was left thinking, why would anyone do that?

Perhaps I struggle to blend with them as much as it appears they struggle to blend with me.
