My teenage son rides a skateboard. We’re actually in the process of building a skate ramp in our backyard which I’ve written a few stories about recently.
A year ago he shattered his clavicle at the skate park in the bowl and had to have reconstructive trauma surgery. He broke a few other bones in the accident as well but not to that extent. He couldn’t get on his skateboard for six months. I thought it would kill him to hold out any longer. He seemed more hurt over not being able to skate than being held together by screws and plates.
I’m proud of him. His passion fuels his courage. It’s an admirable quality. Now, don’t get me wrong. As his mother I’m worried as all get out he’s going to hurt himself again, but reality is, he will over and over. At the same time, I respect his choice and his skill.
