One of the most ridiculous things I had ever agreed to do was teach entry level algebra at a college, during the summer semester, at 8:00 AM on Mondays and Wednesdays. There were 42 students enrolled in the class, 38 showed up on the first day and that number slowly dwindled as the eight weeks continued on. When it was all said and done the 21 students remaining passed and were prepared with the knowledge they needed to step up into their required math courses toward their degree program.
During week two we came to an understanding between teacher and students when I eventually lost my patients with their lack of interest and effort and said, I don’t necessarily want to be here at 8:00 AM teaching algebra during the summer. No one wants to do algebra at all let alone at 8:00 AM but here we are and I’m here because I volunteered to teach this course for one reason and it’s not for the love of math. It’s because I want you to succeed, so you can either utilize this opportunity or stop wasting my time and drop the class.
