Thank you, KD for sharing your story. You haven’t said anything to cause upset. We need need to talk about these things. We need to share our stories. If we leave it in the government’s hands to end this madness or cure this disease I fear people will just keep dying.

In my opinion, right now it’s treated as if it were politics, the opioid epidemic, drinking and driving, all of it and I believe it needs to change. I want it to change. I need it to. People who experience substance abuse issues including alcoholism need to be seen as people, and not their wrong doings. They need to be treated for their disease and not as if they are a disease. Their actions are a means of survival, but unfortunately as a society they’re frowned upon as if it were a choice.

I appreciate all of your support. It was a struggle to write the words for this story, especially because I still feel so angry but I knew writing it from a personal essay perspective was the way to go because as a whole we don’t talk about it enough.
